The Honolulu Star Bulletin had an article recently about recent sexaul assaults at a local nursing home. It is tragic that our elderly citizens repeatedly get abused and neglected at nursing homes. These residents are the most vulnerable population in our country. Regulatory agencies and nursing home industry need to work together to make sure that residents are safe and free from abuse and assault.
The article mentions that the police arrested Mark Genetiano, a 24-year-old certified nursing assistant at a Kahala nursing home, in connection with the sexual assaults of three elderly female patients over a one-month period. Police said the sexual assaults occurred between May 1 and June 1, and that witnesses saw the man sexually assaulting the women. Two of the women are 92 years old and one is 89, all were suffering from dementia.
Bail for has been set at $250,000. According to a police statement filed in court in connection with Genetiano’s arrest, three of Genetiano’s co-workers reported that he pinched the patients’ nipples either while they were changing clothes or were in the bathroom. Co-workers said the women tried to fend off Genetiano’s assault by waving their arms and yelling at him to stop, but Genetiano merely laughed in response. Three of Genetiano’s co-workers said they saw the incidents and described them to police.
