Getting a DUI is expensive. I would guess most people already figured that. But how expensive is it? In 2013 the Illinois Secretary of State published a study that estimated the average DUI in Illinois ends up costing the driver a whopping $16,580 before it’s all said and done.[1] That’s excluding any costs associated with accidents or injuries that may have resulted. Some of the costs that stand out are $4,500 for three years of high-risk auto insurance, $3,600 in court costs and fines, and an estimated $4,230 in lossed wages from time of due to jail, community service, evaluations, and education classes. Be careful out there this holiday season or it may end up costing you more than you realized.
